Bill Frist: Republican Version of Gore/Kerry

All indications are that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will run for President in 2008. If I were a Republican (which I am not), I would be throwing my weight behind any other potential nominee, be it McCain, Giuliani, Romney, or Allen.

The reason is simple: Frist is the Republican version of Al Gore and John Kerry. He is stiff, unable to smile comfortably, prone to qualifiers while speaking, and vulnerable on the flip-flop-o-meter (see reversal on stem cell position last year). If Gore and Kerry have taught us anything, it's that pandering robots always lose.

Republicans would be wise to nominate a candidate that goes against the grain. Such a move would enable voters to feel like they're starting fresh after eight years of Bush, even though they would be returning the same party to power. My money would be on Arizona Senator John McCain or Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
